Visual Technologies Assignment C: Process
Invent an understandable process for creating a 600px x 600px image and execute it multiple times.
The goal is to find a process that seems constraining but is capable of producing a visual variety.

(full assignment description here)

Process:

1. Take one photo at each of the following times: 9am, 12pm, 3pm, and 6pm, Pacific Standard Time.
2. Take a 4:1 portion from each photo, fit portions from top to bottom in chronological order onto a 1:1 artboard, flatten layers and resize to 600px.

Visual variety is subject to location. Fourteen people from all over the United States and Europe took part in this project, taking the four photos at their respective time-zone equivalents. Conceptual emphases: the simultaneous moment(s), transcending of space, universal connection of intent among strangers.

Examples of solutions:

Reflections:

To express the idea of the "simultaneous moment," it probably would have made more sense to have only one photo from one time, executed in unison by a lot of people. However, just one image per execution didn't make the series visually cohesive, so I had to sacrifice a bit of the concept to make the project a little more understandable (and adhering to the project guidelines).

A more appropriate presentation of the solution would have been to have the images lined up horizontally in a way that the corresponding times would be in a straight line (rather than tiling them as they are on the website). I chose not to do this because I'm not a huge fan of side-scrolling pages, although after some argument I realize now that it certainly was a better idea. Also I gotta admit, deliberate side-scrolling pages do look pretty awesome.

i think for the simultaneous moment you might have had to limit your reach regarding users. maybe making sure that it's only ucla students, or only people that live in westwood, it might have made it more cohesive while still being able to get one image.

but yea i dig the idea. really kewl.
